Porsche 911 997
The 997 is two generations wearing one body. The 997.1 Carreras run the last of the M96 and M97 engines; the 997.2 facelift brought direct injection and replaced Tiptronic with PDK. Turbo and GT cars followed their own schedule on the Mezger block, so the facelift did not land on every trim in the same year.

Catalog data: BuildBay vehicle dataset (US market).
- 3.6 flat-six: 997.1 Carrera/Carrera 4 (2005–2008 US). Last of the M96 line. IMS-bearing era.
- 3.8 flat-six: 997.1 Carrera S/Carrera 4S (2005–2008 US). IMS-bearing era.
- 3.6 twin-turbo flat-six: 997.1 Turbo (2007–2009 US). Mezger block — no IMS bearing. Sport Chrono overboost raises torque to 502 lb-ft momentarily.
- 3.6 flat-six (GT3): 997.1 GT3 and GT3 RS (2007–2008 US) share this engine tune. Mezger block, manual only.
- 3.6 twin-turbo flat-six (GT2): 997.1 GT2 (2008–2009 US), RWD. Mezger block, manual only.
- 3.6 flat-six (DFI): 997.2 Carrera/Carrera 4 (2009–2012 US). Direct fuel injection — outside the IMS-bearing concern of the M96/M97 cars.
- 3.8 flat-six (DFI): 997.2 Carrera S/Carrera 4S (2009–2012 US). DFI.
- 3.8 flat-six (DFI, GTS): 997.2 Carrera GTS (2011–2012 US). DFI, revised intake/exhaust over the Carrera S tune.
- 3.8 twin-turbo flat-six (DFI): 997.2 Turbo (2010–2012 US). NOT a Mezger — twin-turbo MA1/9A1-family DFI engine with an integrated dry sump. Verify the exact code suffix against factory literature.
- 3.8 twin-turbo flat-six (DFI, Turbo S): 997.2 Turbo S (2010–2012 US), PDK only. NOT a Mezger — same MA1/9A1-family DFI engine as the Turbo, higher output. Verify the exact code suffix against factory literature.
- 3.8 flat-six (GT3): 997.2 GT3 (2010–2011 US). Mezger block, manual only.
- 3.8 flat-six (GT3 RS): 997.2 GT3 RS (2010–2011 US). Same displacement as the contemporary GT3, tuned higher. Manual only.
- 4.0 flat-six (GT3 RS 4.0): 997.2 GT3 RS 4.0 (2011–2012 US), final and most powerful Mezger 911 engine. Manual only.
- 3.6 twin-turbo flat-six (GT2 RS): 997.2 GT2 RS (2011 US only, extremely limited). Mezger block, manual only, most powerful 997.
Phases
- 9972005 to 2009997.1. Carrera (3.6 M96.05, last of the M96 line) / Carrera S (3.8 M97.01) run MY2005–2008; Turbo (Mezger 3.6 twin-turbo) launched a year later (MY2007) and continued on the pre-facelift Mezger architecture through MY2009 even after Carrera/S had already moved to the DFI 997.2 for MY2009 — the facelift transition was not synchronized across trims, hence the yearTo/yearFrom overlap with 911-997-2 below. GT3/GT3 RS (MY2007–2008) and GT2 (MY2008–2009) also stayed on Mezger.
- 997.22009 to 2012Direct fuel injection (DFI) replaces port injection on Carrera/S, and PDK dual-clutch replaces Tiptronic S as the automatic option — the defining 997.2 change. GTS (2011–2012) is new to this phase. Turbo/Turbo S moved to a DFI 3.8 Mezger for MY2010. GT3/GT3 RS stayed carbureted-free Mezger 3.8 NA (RS grew to 4.0 for its final MY2011–2012 run, marketed as "GT3 RS 4.0"); GT2 RS (MY2011 only, extremely limited) capped the run.
Owning and working on it
- The 997.1 Carrera is a 3.6 at 325 hp and the Carrera S a 3.8 at 355 hp, both M96/M97 engines of the IMS-bearing era. The 997.2 moves them to direct-injection MA1 engines at 345 hp and 385 hp, outside that concern.
- Turbo, GT3, GT3 RS, and GT2 cars run the Mezger block, which has no IMS bearing. The 997.1 Turbo makes 480 hp and carried on unchanged into MY2009 after the Carreras had already moved to the 997.2.
- The 997.2 Turbo and Turbo S are not Mezgers. They are MA1-family direct-injection engines at 500 hp and 523 hp, the S as PDK only. The catalog flags the exact code suffix as something to verify against factory literature.
- The GT3 RS 4.0 of 2011 and 2012 is the final and most powerful Mezger 911 engine at 500 hp, manual only. The 2011-only GT2 RS is the most powerful 997 at 620 hp.
- Brake fluid on a Porsche is a calendar item, not a wear item. The fluid absorbs moisture whether or not the car is driven, so a low-mileage garage car is due on the same schedule as a daily.
- Porsche uses wheel bolts threaded into the hub rather than nuts on studs, so the wheel is unsupported while you line it up. Use a guide pin; cross-threading a hub is an expensive mistake.
