There is NO dipstick on this platform. Oil level is read electronically through the instrument cluster, with the car level and after a settling/temperature window so oil can drain back. Any instruction telling you to pull a dipstick is written for a different car.
This is a conventional wet-sump engine. "Dry fill" figures in generic Porsche oil tables belong to the dry-sump Mezger engines — do not use them here.
Independent specialists commonly advise changing annually regardless of mileage on this platform. Published mileage figures for these years vary too widely to print one.

Dry-sump level checking is not a static cold check — the reading depends on the engine being warm and running, and on the external tank having settled. A cold check can read convincingly full or low and be wrong either way.

Low-tension rings let these burn oil well before anything leaks — bad cases a quart per 1,000-2,000 miles. CHECK THE LEVEL BETWEEN CHANGES; the failure cascade is the quiet part: low oil lets the hydraulic chain tensioner slack off, the chain slaps its plastic guides (cold-start rattle), and on this interference engine a skipped chain is bottom-end and valve damage.
GM ran special-coverage adjustments for piston/ring replacement on the core Equinox/Terrain population and settled a class action on the same defect — check the VIN for coverage before paying for a ring job or short block.

The defining issue is fuel diluting the oil: on cold starts and short trips — especially in cold climates — fuel washes past the rings into the crankcase. The tells are an oil level RISING above the full mark and a gasoline smell on the dipstick; severe cases add misfires.
Honda's fix was a software campaign (ECM recalibration of fuel and warm-up strategy) plus an oil change — not a mechanical recall. Check whether the update was applied.
Practical mitigation owners converge on: shorter oil-change intervals and longer warm-ups in cold climates. If the level is climbing, change it — do not run diluted oil to the schedule.

This engine's notorious flaw is excessive oil consumption: low-tension piston rings gum up with carbon and let oil into the combustion chamber. Bad cases burn a quart every 1,000-2,000 miles.
Check the dipstick BETWEEN changes — the consumption is gradual and an interval-only habit runs it low. Rising consumption on this engine is the ring pattern, not "normal aging".
The honest fix for a confirmed case is pistons/rings, not additives. Short of that, watch the level and keep it topped.

Early FB-generation boxers — roughly 2011-2013 Forester/Outback/Legacy/Crosstrek and 2012-2013 Impreza. Subaru revised the oil-control rings in production around mid-2013; 2015+ builds rarely show the pattern. The EJ engines are a different family with a different reputation (head gaskets), not this.
The early FB oil-control rings let oil burn (not leak) — the defining complaint. Check the dipstick between changes; consumption is gradual and quiet.
The dealer process is a supervised consumption test: fill to full, drive a measured interval (~1,200 miles), remeasure against a defined threshold — cars over it route to piston-ring or short-block replacement under the extended coverage rather than owner-pay.
A class settlement (approved 2016) stretched the powertrain warranty to 8 years/100k for affected engines — lapsed for essentially the whole population now, but request the consumption test and check the VIN's history before paying for ring work on principle.

At every change, LOOK at the drained oil and the drain plug: metallic glitter is the early tell of the known rod-bearing wear on these engine families, and catching it at the knock-free stage is the difference between a free short block and a seized engine on the highway. Check the level between changes too — the related ring-wear complaints burn oil gradually.
The Nu MPI Elantra-era engines have their own oil-consumption pattern (dealer-supervised consumption test → warranty cleaning or long block), and a separate 2019-2020 Nu recall covered over-hardened rings — both are also VIN-check items, not pay-first items.
These are direct-injected (GDI badge): intake-valve carbon is an inherent characteristic, not a defect — rough idle/hesitation in the 20-60k range, addressed by walnut or chemical intake cleaning as owner-pay maintenance.
