Porsche 911 991
The 991 is the generation where the 911 changed twice. Carrera models launched in 2012 on the naturally aspirated 9A1 flat-six, then the 991.2 facelift moved them to the turbocharged 9A2 3.0, the first forced-induction standard Carrera. US cars run 2012 through 2019.

Phases
- 9912012 to 2016991.1. First 911 on the 9A1 flat-six family sized specifically for this chassis (3.4 Carrera / 3.8 Carrera S), first 7-speed manual, first PDK-only GT3 (no manual). GTS (2015) and Targa 4/4S (reintroduced MY2014 with a retractable glass-roof mechanism, AWD only) round out the range. The limited-run 911 R (MY2016 only, manual-only, GT3 RS 4.0-derived engine) closes out 991.1.
- 991.22017 to 2019Carrera/S/GTS move to the turbocharged 9A2 3.0 flat-six — the first forced-induction standard Carrera. GT3/GT3 RS stayed naturally aspirated on a 9A1-derived 4.0 architecture; a 6-speed manual returned to the GT3 for MY2019 only (PDK-only for MY2018). Turbo/Turbo S kept a 9A1-based 3.8 twin-turbo (not the Carrera's 9A2 3.0).
Owning and working on it
- The 991.1 Carrera uses a 3.4 rated 350 hp and the Carrera S a 3.8 rated 400 hp, both naturally aspirated and both on the 9A1 family built specifically for this chassis.
- GT3 and GT3 RS stayed naturally aspirated through the facelift on a 9A1-derived 4.0 architecture, and Turbo and Turbo S kept a 9A1-based 3.8 twin-turbo rather than the Carrera’s 9A2 3.0.
- The 991 brought the first seven-speed manual 911 and the first PDK-only GT3. A six-speed manual returned to the GT3 for MY2019 only.
- The catalog carries fifteen distinct US engine specs across the two phases. On this platform more than most, identify the exact car before ordering anything.
