The tools your first jobs actually need

The usual advice is to buy a big kit. It is bad advice, and not because kits are bad. It is bad because a kit is sized to a price point rather than to the work you are about to do, so it simultaneously gives you eighty pieces you will never touch and omits the one adapter your car actually needs.
Tools are better bought in the order the work demands. The sequence below is that order.
Buy safety before capability
The first purchases are not the ones that let you do more. They are the ones that decide whether working under a car is survivable.
A jack raises a car. It does not hold one. Every job that puts any part of you underneath needs rated stands, on ground that will not sink, with the wheels chocked. This is not a preference and it is not a budget decision. It is the one place in DIY where the failure mode is not "the job goes badly".
Eye protection belongs in the same group, along with a fire extinguisher within reach of where you work, and gloves that survive contact with fuel and solvent.
None of this is interesting to buy. All of it comes first.
Then buy for the job in front of you
After safety, let the work choose. A first oil service, a first brake job, and a first spark plug change want overlapping but not identical sets, and each will surface exactly one thing you do not have.
Rather than guess, read the requirements before ordering parts. Every job page in the DIY job library lists the tools that job calls for, split by how badly it needs them. Required means the job does not proceed without it; the rest make it faster, cleaner, or safer. That distinction is the whole trick to not overbuying.
The pattern that repeats: the common hand tools cover most of the job, and then there is one item that is specific: a filter cap of exactly the right size, a bit type your car's fasteners use, a socket thin enough to reach where a normal one will not. That specific item is what turns a Saturday into a Sunday if you discover it with the car already apart.
Torque is a tool, not a feeling
The step people skip longest is buying a torque wrench, on the theory that experience substitutes for measurement. It does not, and the fasteners where it matters most are the ones holding the wheels, the brakes, and the suspension to the car.
A torque wrench is also the tool most often needed in two ranges rather than one: the small fasteners that strip and the large ones that must not come loose are far apart, and one wrench rarely covers both well. Buy the range the jobs you are doing actually call for. The torque wrench page lists which jobs in the catalog require one.
Torque figures themselves are per-vehicle and per-fastener. They belong to your manual or to verified per-vehicle data, never to a general article, which is why you will not find any in this one.
Buy once, where buying twice hurts
Some tools are fine cheap. Some are not, and the distinction is not about pride.
Buy carefully where failure is dangerous or where the tool damages the work: anything load-bearing, anything that measures, and anything that grips a fastener you cannot afford to round off. A cheap socket that rounds a caliper bolt has cost you far more than the socket.
Buy cheaply where the tool is occasional, non-load-bearing, and easily replaced. Plenty of specialty tools get used once a decade, and there is no virtue in a premium version sitting unused.
The middle path for genuinely one-off specials: check whether a loan-a-tool program covers it before buying.
Stop buying the same thing twice
The most common way a home garage wastes money is not overpaying. It is buying a duplicate because nobody could remember whether they already owned one, or where it went.
Two habits fix it. Give tools a home so absence is visible: a shadow, a labelled drawer, anything that makes a gap obvious. And keep an inventory you can check from the parts store, because that is where the duplicate gets bought.
